Spyderco Caly 3.5 - Laminated ZDP-189 & 420J2 Blade - Carbon Fiber Handle

The Caly (short for Calypso) 3.5 is the latest offering in this classic series of knives. One of their most popular patterns, Spyderco has a number of knife designs that sell well year after year, and the Caly/Calypso models certainly qualify for that honor. Their functionality, quality of manufacture and proven reliable high-performance track record keep them in demand. Spyderco frequently upgrades them with new different blade steel and handle materials, so once you become addicted, there will certainly be more offerings to come.

The Calypso is one of the classic mainstays that spawned numerous variations and converted legions of knife buyers to the benefits of flat-ground, thick leaf-shaped blades. This is a workingman’s/woman’s folder founded on the premise that a comfortable pocketknife should feel like a natural extension of your hand.

The Calypso progeny is a larger version of the original three-inch bladed Calypso Jr., featuring a three and one-half inch blade. It is called the Caly3.5. Available now in a premium variant, is the Caly 3.5 with a laminated ZDP-189/420J2 blade matched with a carbon fiber handle.

The leaf-shaped blade is made of three layers of steel. The core is high carbon ZDP-189 Japanese powdered steel, the outer laminated layers are softer, pliable 420J2 steel. The blade is full-flat ground with a PlainEdge that passes effortlessly through material.

It comes with a gray carbon fiber handle and a mid-positioned back-lock. Its low-seated wire clip designed for right-hand deep-pocket, tip-up carry.

Great ergonomics means more control over the cutting edge. The Caly 3.5 accomplishes this with a substantial finger choil located where the handle and blade meet. The choil creates an ergonomic slot situating the index finger naturally on the handle’s underside while positioning the thumb directly above the index finger on the blade’s spine.

The Caly3.5 ZDP-189 manages to combine beauty and functionality into a new Spyderco classic.

    Spyderco Caly 3.5 CF ZDP-189

Posted by John Nichols on Sep 2nd 2012

When folded up and in the pocket, this knife is literally the same size as the Spyderco Delica. Both knives are a good size for carry.

However; when opened up, this knife is 0,625" longer. At 3.5" it's almost as long as a Spyderco Endura, which is really too big for pocket carry. It's the best of both worlds. You get a bigger blade in the same size package.

Up to now, the Delica has always been my favorite carry knife. But the Caly 3.5 is even better. The ZDP-189 blade stays sharp, and you can safely choke up your grip using the nicely jimped choil.

I never considered the Delica as nice looking, but the Caly 3.5 is really a beautiful knife. I expect to get many years of great use from it.
