Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight C41PBK5 - CPM-S30V Blade - Black FRN Handle

First introduced in 1997, the Native has become a mainstay of the Spyderco product line and a flagship of their American-made stable of knives. The design has evolved steadily over the years, reaching its current state of the art in 2012 with the release of the Native 5. The latest addition to the Native lineage is the Native 5 Lightweight, which combines the Native 5’s engineering refinements with the weight-saving advantages of an injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle.

Proudly manufactured in our factory in Golden, Colorado, the Native 5 features a spear point blade made from premium CPM S30V stainless steel. Its full-flat grind, distal taper, textured index-finger choil and thumb ramp, and understated swedge collectively offer a distinctive appearance and outstanding edge geometry and point utility. The blade is supported by a highly refined back lock mechanism that takes this time-tested lock design and elevates it to a new standard of engineering and manufacturing excellence.

The linerless FRN handle features Bi-Directional Texturing™ for an ultra-secure grip and reduces the overall weight of the knife to a scant 2.5 ounces. The handle also houses four sets of threaded inserts molded directly into the FRN. These allow the improved hourglass clip to be positioned for left or right-side tip-up or tip-down carry. A generously sized lanyard hole also provides a handy attachment point for lanyards, fobs, and safety lines.

A highly advanced evolution of a time-honored design, the Native 5 Lightweight is an incredibly capable, pocket-sized cutting tool and a shining example of Spyderco’s commitment to making even our best products consistently better.

This is a GREAT option for EDC

Posted by sully v on Feb 25th 2020

All I can say is WOW! The Native-5 Lightweight is an outstanding choice for EDC (especially since many cities limit blade length to 3.5" or less). The Native-5 LW is built like a tank. The blade thickness is good, lock-back is very strong, the FRN scales are substantial, and the ergos are some of the best.

I have Delica's, Manix 2 LW, Dragonfly's and recently tried a Para-3 LW, all of those are good options, but before you buy those give the Native-5 LW a hard look.

    Great EDC knife

Posted by Robert Levy on Sep 29th 2015

First of all, I'm left handed and carry my EDC knives in my left pocket, so some of my review won't apply to everyone. I carried a Kershaw Camber for several months and really wanted to like it. It's a great knife in most respects. However, the tip-up-only carry and essentially non-reversible pocket clip really made it difficult to safely carry left handed. After several holes in my pocket and a pretty good cut on my hand, it was time for something else.

I picked up a Spyderco Native-5 lightweight a few weeks ago and have been really happy with it. I prefer EDC knives in the 3" blade length range. I have larger hands and have no issues with the smaller handle whether using the finger choil on the blade or not. Blade shape is good. Deployment has more friction than other Spydercos I own, but I don't usually flick blades open anyway. It has a very solid looking lock. I like the CPM-s35vn steel so far. Sharpening has never really been an issue for me (I use diamond stones and 1200 and 2000 grit sandpaper), but it's significantly easier to re-profile the s35vn than s30v or ZDP-189. I carried a Delica for a long time, but didn't really like the relative lack of edge holding of the VG-10 compared to something like s30v. Typical use for me is deburring or shaping hard wood, cutting/scraping glue off wood, food prep, and infrequent box cutting and wire stripping.

    Excellent for EDC

Just got mine today from Cutlery Shoppe. Wow that was fast! And this Spyderco is Native 5 has the sharpest blade I have ever seen. Very light, on the small side but capable and pockets extremely well. The FRN is grippy - but does feel like plastic. But - it is a light and superior material for EDC. And CPM S35VN - what a great steel. And what a steal at the price!!

    Nice size for EDC.

Handle is for large or small hands, great handle ergonomics, no hot spots, and very sharp out of the box. Blade symmetry and length great for most everyday use.
