Cold Steel 97AM24S Latin Machete - w/Sheath

If you were suddenly castaway on a desert island or stranded in the wilderness or a jungle, what's the one blade you would want at your side? The answer is a good machete. Over the last three centuries, the machete has proven to be the ultimate outdoor and survival tool. It will cut, chop, slash, hack, split, scrape, scoop, hammer, dig, crush, carve, whittle, crack or smash just about anything you can put in front of it. The machete also makes a deadly improvised weapon. It can be used to kill both fish and game and will gut, scale, filet, skin, quarter, and butcher them for the table as well. And when you factor the meager cost of a machete, it's definitely one of the best bargains in the world. In fact - it's so cheap and useful that even the poorest person in South America or tribesman in Africa invariably owns one, and counts on it as one of his most precious possessions. After testing many blades around the world Cold Steel decided that those made in South Africa offered the best value and performance. The blades are made out of SAE 1055 medium carbon steel and are dipped in a special anti-rust solution before receiving a black baked-on finish. Each machete comes with a good utility edge that will cut right out of the box and, with a little work, can be made hair shaving sharp. The handles permanently injected molded around the blade's tang. They have been designed to provide a comfortable secure grip and to last practically forever, as they are highly resistant to chipping , cracking or breaking.

Have you been looking for a machete with extra reach and leverage? Perhaps something with a more traditional style blade and handle? Then Cold Steel has the tool for you! The Latin Style Machetes are available with with eighteen or twenty four inch blade lengths. With their non-slip, shock absorbing PVC rubber handles, they are perfect in almost every environment from the jungle to the forest or even on the farm.

Reinforced black Cordura belt sheath included.

More about 1055 Carbon steel:
1055 steel is right on the border between a medium and a high carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.50%-0.60% and with manganese between 0.60%-0.90% as the only other component. The carbon content and lean alloy make this a shallow hardening steel with a quenched hardness between Rc 60-64 depending on exact carbon content. These combination of factors make this one of the toughest steels available because, when quenched, it produces a near saturated lathe martensite with no excess carbides, avoiding the brittleness of higher carbon materials. This steel is particularly suited to applications where strength and impact resistance is valued above all other considerations and will produce blades of almost legendary toughness.

I understand that machetes don't need a beautiful edge like a fine knife, but this thing came to me about as sharp as a butter knife. One entire side of the blade was left with a burr big enough to grab ahold of with my fingertips. Wow! I wouldn't dare use it with a burr that big because it would either chip off or roll all the way over. I had to grind off the burr and reprofile the whole thing with a mill file, belt grinder, and DMT diamond stones. Lots of work for a brand new blade.

The black finish is an absolute joke. The blade comes with a big sticker on one side and after peeling it off I used soap and water to wipe off the adhesive. The black finish wiped right off with it immediately. Just taking it in and out of the sheath a couple times has rubbed streaks of the finish off so imagine how it'll hold up to some actual USE. I'm not worried about the looks (it's just a tool after all) but I am concerned about rust.

The PVC handle is supposedly "non-slip" but all the texturing and jimping doesn't give it a lick of traction. I can definitely see the texture causing some nasty blisters as well. I put some water on my hand to simulate using it with sweaty hands and the PVC gets so slick it's uncontrollable. What's worse, the whole handle is permanently injection molded around the tang - no way of removing it without destroying it so you can't even replace it with your own handle. There were several sharp casting marks on the handle that I had to file and sand off before use.

I know, I know, "it's a cheap blade, what did you expect?" Fair enough, I didn't expect perfection, but this is just careless workmanship and a complete absence of quality control. I'd be ashamed to sell someone a product like this at any price.

All this trouble already and I haven't even used the thing yet. I've used other inexpensive Cold Steel products that were great, so this was pretty shocking.

Great service and prompt shipping from Cutlery Shoppe though!
