Cold Steel 39L16CT TrailMaster Bowie

Why buy a Trail Master? That's simple. Because it is, without a doubt, the most knife for the money ever commercially built! In terms of sharpness, edge holding and strength, it will out perform by a wide margin any factory made knife and 99 percent of all hand forged knives as well! Cold Steel knows they're "going out on a limb" with that statement, but since 1987 they have challenged the industry to make a better knife and yet, to this day, they've had no takers.
The broad clip point of the blade is extremely resistant to bending or breaking. This is largely due to the fact that the tip is actually thicker near the point than what's found in most bowie knives. This, however, does not mean that the point is dull or blunt. On the contrary, the point is almost needle sharp and offers tremendous penetration. Plus, the blade-back is equipped with a slightly concave false edge that measures approximately three and a half inches long. Every Trail Master's edge has been honed by hand, then given a high speed buff until it is truly razor sharp and capable of easily shaving the hair off one's arm. This knife is so sharp it will cut at the slightest touch. The Trail Master balances approximately 3/4" in front of the guard for a slightly blade-heavy feel that is ideal for delivering heavy chopping and slashing strokes. The Trail Master's Kraton handle is 5" long and deeply checkered for a non-slip, shock absorbing grip. What's more, its contoured cross section helps prevent the knife from shifting or turning in the hand when striking full power blows. The double guard is very study and rigidly fixed into place. It is long enough to keep fingers off the blade, yet short enough to avoid being tangled in clothing or equipment when the Trail Master is drawn.

More about O-1 steel:
O-1 is a high carbon, oil hardening tool steel. The "O" stands for oil hardening. Popular with custom knife makers because of its versatility, it can be used for stock removal as well as forged knives and is often utilized for tomahawks and axes as well. With proper heat treatment, O-1 will take and hold a very fine edge while remaining remarkably tough and durable. Known for its ability to be differentially heat treated, O-1 is an ideal steel for edged weapons and tools and while more costly than SK-5, it is a decided step-up in performance.

my first really good knife. it is going to be very hard to beat for the price. it has a massive blade 5/16 thick, 9 in. long. the handle is a generous very good non-slip rubber, that will make wood working out in the bush much less work. it was recommended to me by a buddy at work & nutnfancy on youtube, check it out. jeff & the folks at cutlery made ordering & receiving fast & easy. i will shop here again.

just got it a couple of days ago. haven't had the chance to put it work yet, but soon. the knife is extremly well built. the blade is massive but well balanced & easy to control. the handle is secure & not the least bit slippery. nice to see that it came with a "secure-ex" (kydex) sheath. jeff & the folks at cutlery shoppe got the order, shipped it out, and i got it in 4 days. no hassels whatsoever. will shop here again.

I received the knife a week ago, and after getting over the initial shock of the blade being covered in heavy petroleum for protection, all I can say is WOW! This blade is huge, but it is balanced perfectly. I spoke with Jeff last month to get his opinion on this knife and as usual he was correct - this is a well engineered knife. The blade steel is excellent, it holds its edge very well, the weight and balance for cutting and chopping is excellent and it comes honed to a fine edge. I have used it in the yard cutting and hacking firewood and clearing brush, and it exceeded my expectations. I look forward to my next camping outing with this blade; I'm sure it will continue to exceed my expectations in the field. The only down side is the leather sheath, but I'm sure I can deal with that. Thanks again for the recommendation Jeff, I'll continue to buy from the Cutlery Shoppe your customer service can't be beat.

An awesome knife, the balance, finish, and fit are all excellent and it is sharper than most other knives straight out of the factory. I have wanted one of these for a long time and chose it over several others- I am glad I did. The sheath is leather and appears fine, personally I prefer cordura for the sheath material but that isn't a big deal in the overal picture. The service from Cutlery Shoppe in getting the knife to me in a short time frame for a trip was a huge relief. Thanks for the great service!
